| Ultra-Screen™
First Trimester Screening provides Down syndrome
risk assessment by combining an ultrasound NT
(nuchal translucency) measurement with a PAPP-A/freeBeta™
blood test.
The training for becoming an Ultras-Sreen™ provider
begins with attending an 11-14 Week Nuchal Translucency
Certification course. The course instruct participants
in all aspects of performing the measurements
as well as managing a patient with an abnormality. These
courses must be an official course cosponsored
by the Fetal Medicine Foundation or Fetal Medicine
Foundation of America. See the schedule of Upcoming
Courses.
An Online CME 11-14 Week Nuchal Certification
Course is also available for those individuals
who find it difficult to travel to a course.
A logbook of a total of 50 images from patients
examined is then to be completed. The goal is
to see as many different types of patients as
possible within the desirable gestational age
range. However, it is acceptable to collect
2-3 images on each patient. The initial 10 films
are sent for review to the Fetal Medicine Foundation
representative in the United States, Ms. Naomi
Greene, using the film submission form. Any
errors will be noted so you may modify your technique
early in this training process. The remaining
films needed are then sent to the Fetal Medicine
Foundation in the United States, using the attached
film submission form for final review and acceptance. Lastly,
you will be asked to demonstrate your competence
by submitting a videotape of 3 nuchal scans being
performed.
The Center for Medical Genetics sponsors NT
ultrasound workshops to help individuals learning
this technique. These workshops bring together
a group of trainees with actual patients and
an experienced instructor to facilitate this
training experience. These workshops can be
a time-saving way to accumulate the necessary
images or to have the practical portion of the
testing process completed.
Once certified, the Center for Medical Genetics
will assist you by referring patients in your
community who are interested in this test as
well as providing you with materials for the
biochemical testing.
Throughout this time, we will be in contact
with you. The process is lengthy, and requires
that one be dedicated to the education process. Be
assured, though, that competency training is
required of all providers and all providers can
provide the same level of patient care.
